Another plasma or lcd question! - 24 March 2008 08:45
Hello all,am on the point of upgrading my setup.  I currently have a non hd 3yr old panasonic 42" plasma, ps3 and 1000w panasonic 5.1 surround sound that has the floor standing speaker things.  I want to go bigger with the screen. i have chosen the speakers and amp (after lots of thinking ans switching from one system to another.  the av receiver i am getting is a denon avr2308, speakers are kef kht3005, dvd players is denon dvd1940.  i have a denon setup in my dining room and loce their products and also had some kef cresta 2 speakers a long time ago.  i want satalite speakers because i live in a flat and room is limited.   Im torn between 2 screens,  a 50" plasma or a 46" lcd both by samsung, again because i have a 32" samsung lcd in my bedroom.  The problem is i do just as much gaming as watching dvds in my front room so dont know which screen to go for.  gaming in my bedroom just isnt a option as coming down from a 42" to 32" on cod4 will be sh1te.  what do you guys think?  and also what do you think of my choice of setup?  i am getting the sound system from superfi for £1200 and the screen from empire direct, plasma will be bout £850 or lcd bout £1400.  i am on a budget but my budget always goes out the window to get the right equipment and have no regrets in the future - thats why i always take so long to decide which product to go for.

And also how much do you think i'll get for a non hd 42" panasonic plasma and surround sound?  maybe on ebay?  i was thinking about £400

oohhhhhhhhhh lvely stuff........but I would be 50:50 too, on the other hand I would own the plasma for the best enjoyment from my DVDs and TV, then again im on my 360 as much of the time, and you are talking a huge proce difference between either the LCD or the Plasma, I guess you have to weight up this, I think the plasma would be better overall, as the loss in movies playback over the LCD would be more noticable than anything you would lose on the gaming side.

thanks for the reply,  i think im going to go for the plasma tv, only thing that worries me a little is the screen burn, but sod it at 850 instead of 1400 i can just replace it and not be too much out of pocket.  next thing now is cables, do you think its worth spending lots on hdmi? speaker cable? etc, i have one £50 scart and one £3.99 one ad i dont think i can tell much of a difference!

There is more of a case for a good SCART, dont buy expensive HDMI there is no difference whatsoever.

Speaker cables terms I pay for one about 2 steps up from the basic, the reson for this is generall you get a thicker/ stronger cable, so it will last the test of time better, honestly you wont tell much of a difference again.

UPDATE:

i have now comvinced my wife that updating our front room setup is the way to go, although it did cost a holiday!    I am ordering the above denon and kef setup from the prev post.  Next one is...... I'm torn between two screens,  i really like panasonic and samsung as i have had both..  i have decided that plasma will be the one i get but whichc one i dont know.  Panasonic TH50PZ700PED  or   Samsung PS-50P96FD

Which one do you think is better?  And why?

I thought about the new kef kht 3005 se which is the model replacing the 3005, but my budget which has already gone through the window can't take it!

Im gonna side with the Panny, the Sammy is good and everything, but  the Panasonics are a good bit out in front when it comes to Plasmas these days, jsut overall Picture quality looks better with richer colurs too.

What prices do you have between the 2?

Ive been out and about today, and i too think the panasonic is a better sreen.  The samsung is around £1100 and panasonic around £1600    i would like to upgrade to a 50 inch, i have a feeling that if i want to go to 50inc itll have to be a samsung as im not sure i can afford £1600.  or maybe settle for a 42 inch and have the samsung.   I am buzzing and well excited to get my new toys.  the denon and kefs will be ordered tomorrow and my tv should be here in about 2 weeks,  i will be like a dog with 2 d1cks!

Is a 50  i want really, i have seen the panasonic 42 for 999 so have to weigh up whether i want a panasonic 42" or a 50" samsung.  need to think whether it wouls be better to go with a bigger screen that isnt quite as good th panasonic or stay with a 42" screen size.

thats the prev model with 2 hdmi inputs (which isnt a problem as my amp will take ps3,dvd,tv)  this one is 720p  the model up is 1080p  and is more pixels too.   not to sure on all the numbers etc, but im guessing the higher the better!

Yea, higher the better lol, tho if its 1080p its prettymuch fixed, and hence the price jump!

Tho at the 50" would be well worth it.
