How much did you spend on cables?
-
04 March 2007 16:01
I always forget if ordering new stuff, then have to go back and order cables, it tallyies up! I think to this day ive spent around £800 on cables, mostly due from them all being component cables and being about 3m long, would have to say I do think its worth it. Ive always had the point of view that "the chain will only be as strong as the weakest point", which i guess would lie between connections and cables. Would you have a cut off point to how much you would spend JUST on the cables?

I would spend money if I had it spare. To date though the only expensive lead I bought was a £55 scart

Its imperative to match the cable cost relative to components. Its no good spending 5 or 6 grand on a setup only to have sh1te interconnects and speaker cable. I agree though, they are usually an afterthought when pricing up new gear.

I agree though, they are usually an afterthought when pricing up new gear. I quite agree but it's shocking how far people will push this concept. I am a freelance AV engineer and am often asked for advice on whether some (for example) £100 per meter cable that someone's seen is a good investment - after they've already bought it of course. I think they get a bollocking from their significant other and just want some backup!

Not much lol, I spent about £30 on cables in a couple of days last year trying to get my old PC to link to my TV and I still didn't get it working lol. I bought a new TV and PC in the end! lol Unfortunately, I went to work and the missus decided to 'move the room around' as they do - so I never bothered linking it up in the end as the room is 22foot long and I haven't had the energy to get into all the cable running..

I wouldn't personally go above £10 pm for speaker cable.

When I dismantle these high end devices with gold plated connectors, for connection via component or scart even speaker. i always have a chuckle to find the plug and socket that feeds them is no more than a 10p tin plated affair.
Been there, done it, got the headache, now its your turn.

Sad but true, you want to know where corners are cut, must be nearly every input/output connection on a screen.

Their is a ongoing argument about what exactly a "better" HDMI cable can offer, i'm not deicded yet myself, but at the moment Im not sure about the need to get a top quality one. Fro shielding the cable yes, but other than that. ORIGINAL: Malso I use an average hdmi cable from the denon 1920 to the sxrd and a hdmi/dvi from the pc to the tv

People who know more than me tell me if you're serious about your system you should spend 10 percent of its price on cables!

I've got quality cables for analogue sources but not fussed about my hd stuff. thanks to the joys of digital i'm going to save a fortune over the years

As I mentioned in a post the other week I got shafted for £200 Aussie dollars for a HDMI cable! Took some advice from the lads on here and got it refunded and bought a cheapie which is exactly the same
