Sony DVD Player: Cropped Picture Output - 15 September 2008 20:21
Hi,
I just registered here so I can post a query that's prolly showing my ignorance, so apologies in advance for that!
I've actually had the equipment I'm using for some time (12+ months), so it shows how attentive I am, but I just realised the picture output is cropped! I watched a film where there was a 'based on' credit and the original novel's title was in quotes... but the left-hand quotes weren't visible. I thought it might be some kind of fake anammorphic transfer that caused a bit of a crop, but...
For some reason, I put it in my computer's DVD player today and had a look. On computer, playback isn't cropped at all. Left-hand quotes visible, and comparing with playback on 32" LCD (Techwood), roughly the same amount missing from the other side too.
I thought this might be something to do with the LCD itself, or something to do with it being HD-ready (sorry, not a techy on this stuff at all), so, out of curiosity I set the DVD player for a 4.3 TV, BUT, even with letterboxing, the sides (and presumably top and bottom) of the display is cropped in exactly the same way. So I am assuming it's the DVD player that is sending a cropped signal out.
Am I being too long-winded? Sorry again. I should mention the DVD player model, I guess: Sony DVP-NS29. SCART connection. So... um, help? Is this normal? Is there a fix? It's not a big deal, but I think now I noticed it, it's gonna get on my nerves...

Thanks,

CH

Have you looked thru the DVD players screen options, alot of DVD players will have you set the screen size manually, or sill give you about 6 options how you want it to fill the screen.

If you could take a look in its bmenu I willing to bet you find a screen settings in it..

Umm actually...is it just his dvd you have noticed anything on? or is it the first time to give you reason to notice it?

The missing quote mark was the first time I ever really thought about it -- it was right at the edge of the screen, so it just stuck out as blatantly cropped. Tho I must admit, I had this feeling for some time that the bars on 2.35:1 films were smaller than they'd been on my CRT set, so I'm sure the cropping is all sides, maybe 5% of the picture or something. Unfortunately, I bought this LCD only a month or so after the DVD player, so I don't know if it displayed the same on that. Which is a nuisance. I gave it away to a friend, so I can't check it out on another set.

I realised this might've been the wrong section to post in... or maybe not, as I'm still not 100% sure whether it's the player or the display. I've been reading stuff online, things about overscan and whatever (it has me genuinely curious, and also thinking of an upgrade -- maybe to an HDMI-compatible player, tho my budget's way low), but I'm in the dark on this stuff. Just don't want a picture that's cropped this much! Now that I know it'll cause me endless anxiety!

Can't see owt in the menus that helps me with this, alas.
Thanks,
CH

I'd be inclined to say it's your screen at fault. Cheapo tv's are notorious for cropping and aspect problems.
