Toshiba stepping back into the ring with Blu-Ray for round 2 - 02 June 2008 13:31

After the defeat with HD-DVD it looked like Toshiba was down and out in the way of High Definition Format Wars ...

Well it looks like that is all about to change ...

Toshiba have apparently found a way of making High resolution images off of your existing DVD Collection , Yes you heard right standard DVD's

Although Toshiba is adamant that this isn't another DVD Upscaler...

Toshiba's new players will have an integrated chip that will convert the normal images into Hi-Res images

These chips will be incorporated into DVD players making them a Lot Cheaper that the current Blu-Ray players ...

We will bring you more on this when Toshiba reveals more ...

Sounds good

Ha, nice to know they aint quit altogether, but I have a feeling theywill do this, then make their own BR players CHEAPER than Sonys stuff.

I think Tosh are big enough to be able to do that!

Interesting.  Either way though, always good to have a bit of competition to benefit consumers

So you've got a chip in your DVD player, that increases the resolution of the image rather than upscaling it....

Is it just me or is that the same as comparing a half full glass to a half empty one...???

The only way you can increase the amount of pixels displayed from a file is to use an algorythm to interpret what might have been there if there had been more pixels to start with.

Big bunch of spin IMO, maybe a good upscaler, but AFAIK, an upscaler by definition.

Yep its an upscaler, BUT, they have been working on this for a few years now, its really jsut been hear'say about hwo good it was, although some still shots of how goot it was where released, their was no talk of it for months while BR and HD-DVD went head to head.

Really Tosh should give it up and go into making BR players and beat Sony at their own game by making them cheaper.

Howeveer, IF said player turns out to be Sub £100, of good build quality and is as good as they make out (or from the still i remember), people will like the look of it!

Have to admit upscaling on my TV is frigging ace...
